In Latin America the old measurements are still used to measure land. A small overview.
Measuring land area in Latin America
No metric system, no USA system, but the old measurements of the Spanish are most of the time used to measure land.
If you are interested in buying some property, or just curious, this are the units used in Central America:
1 vara = 83.59 cm.
1 manzana = 10.000 square varas
1 caballeria = 64 manzanas
Or in our metric system:
1 hectare (10.000 square meters) = 1.43115 manzanas
I heard that a caballeria got its name because it took a rider on a horse a day to go around an area that big.
