20th of February 2005

Weather:

Perfect. Blue sky and the jungle as a variety of greens.
Not to warm during the night and the humidity is reasonable. A nice breeze in the afternoon.

The big thing of today was the concert I was giving in La Lancha, the restaurant of Jessica and Ingeborg. It was announced on the radio (that is the VHF radio, the way sailors communicate in relatively close distances).

Everything was arranged, I was going to play at 19.00 hours, with the help of my CD’s, music minus one. We came to La Lancha around 18.00 hours, just to relax a bit and to have a beer before I really started to work.
I left a note for Tono, my friend and biggest Guatemalan fan of my performances, in Tijax. I knew he would show up there eventually.

It was a good crowd at 19.00 hours and the atmosphere was good. I could concentrate on playing nice music in a nice and not to loud way. I started with ‘Tune Up’ from Miles Davis, just to warm up and to check the acoustic conditions. It is a nice tune to do a thing like that.
Other pieces were Latin, Bossa Nova and Bebop oriented. Some Jobim, some Charlie Parker, some Sonny Rollins and even some Duke Ellington tunes.

At 20.00 hours more people came in. A very nice and relaxed atmosphere. Also Clam and Al came with some drums. I decided to stop the CD’s. We played a bit together. Maybe it was not the greatest music, but it was fun for the players and the public liked the spectacle.
After one improvised song they let me go on with my show.

Most of the time I play for 45 minutes and then take a brake of 15 minutes. Two sets is ok to do. Three sets is tiring, but still doable.

This night was a night of three sets, because Tono and his girlfriend came late, around 21.15.
They ordered something to eat, and so did I. In the meantime I played. I cannot remember how I managed to do all the things—eating, talking to Tono, Marcella and Vivian, small chat with fans, playing—but I did it and it was a good night.

This sunday-morning a lot of people congratulated me with the performance and thanked me for the nice night. Nice for my ego.
